In January this year, our Field Education Officer, Daud Abdi made his maiden overseas voyage from Kenya after being invited to participate in a conservation and training programme in Namibia.

Daud, who is based in our research camp in the heart of Samburu, Northern Kenya, was among more than 200 wildlife managers, conservation policy leaders, and students and academics, to attend 2018 Pathways Africa in Windhoek. The theme of the event this year was the changing nature of wildlife conservation.

As part of the programme, Daud attended a three-day hands-on training workshop for early and mid-career field staff skill which included skills building sessions focused on community-based conservation and monitoring, education, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, communication, and much more.

Daud immersed himself in panel discussions, group activities and keynote speeches on topics ranging from management of fisheries and wildlife to the importance of environmental education, communication and awareness. He described the opportunity as one of a kind, and says he plans to apply the lessons he learnt to further his work as a research assistant and conservation educator in Samburu and help us forge new frontiers in elephant conservation!
