HARARE – Conservationists say 94 critically endangered vultures have died on the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The vultures appear to have been poisoned by poachers who had killed an elephant in the area.

The African white-backed vultures are considered to be critically endangered.

Sources say they died on Friday when they fed on the carcas of an elephant that had been poisoned by poachers.

It’s sadly a not uncommon practice.

There are claims this took place inside Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park, though that has not been officially confirmed.

VulPro, a leading vulture conservation group, says the news is a devastating blow made worse by the fact that the birds’ breeding season is in full swing.
