A 12-year-old boy is recuperating at Nyahururu District Hospital after he was attacked by an elephant. Charles Wanjohi was taken to hospital in critical condition by his relatives and residents of Shamanei in Laikipia West after the Friday attack.

The standard four pupil at Maina Primary School suffered an arm fracture and chest and face injuries. Serah Mumbi said Wanjohi and another boy were on their way to join her on their farm when they met elephants from Shamanei Forest.

“The other boy managed to escape while Wanjohi was grabbed and tossed up in the air as the rest of the herd continued with its journey. Our neighbours screamed and the elephant left the boy,” she said.

Mumbi’s brother-in-law called her on the phone and informed her of the attack. Nurse Esther Wangunyu said his condition is stable. The attack comes as the Laikipia government embarks on a multimillionshilling project to put up electric fences around local forests.
