Two suspected elephant poachers yesterday appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Tinashe Tashaya charged with illegal possession of two tusks weighing 13 kilogrammes and valued at $2 200.
Webster Nyaruviro (49) and Max Bloomton (46) of Nkulumane and Cowdray Park respectively, were remanded in custody to July 31.
The duo accused the police of denying them the right to seek legal representation or contact family members since their arrest last week.
The court heard that on July 12 this year, detectives from Minerals and Border Control Unit Bulawayo received information that the accused were allegedly carrying elephant tusks in their car, which was parked at Bradfield Shops.
Police pounced on the car and allegedly recovered a portable electronic scale and two raw ivory tusks stashed in the spare wheel compartment, leading to the pair’s arrest.
