Freeland.org, a frontline counter trafficking organisation, released its latest online took kit to protect wildlife at a presentation in Bangkok, Thursday.

The official launch held at the Bangkok-based Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand attracted media and conservationists, who were given a preview of www.wildlifeprotectiontoools.net

Designed to counter wildlife trafficking the new website provides “tools and assets to help civil society and law enforcement officers working in counter wildlife trafficking.”

But Freeland is keen to recruit the support of the region’s travel industry, particularly tour companies to identify risks and take a lead in boycotting attractions that could be a cover for wildlife trafficking or abuse.

Freeland says: “Private sector companies have an important role to play in curbing international wildlife trafficking. Sectors such as transport and banking may become unwitting accomplices to wildlife traffickers, and face financial, reputational and regulatory liabilities.”

Freeland creates manuals, flyers and public service announcements for airlines, travel organisations, and banks as well as offering training.

The online toolkit is publicly available and free. Designed to assist those working in counter wildlife trafficking, the tools identifies approaches to counter poaching; investigation training; community support; methodologies to analyse and strengthen laws and policies; behaviour change and outreach campaigning; building enforcement networks; and species identification.

The tool kit was developed with the help of funding and technical support of ASEAN Member States, Blue Moon Fund, Lusaka Agreement Task Force and the United States government.
