Sundergarh /Keonjhar: Elephant menace gripped some parts of Sundergarh and Keonjhar today while injuring a woman and damaging house and property.

In Sundergarh, a herd of stray elephants went on a rampage in Ganighasa village under Kuliposh Forest Range under Bonai Sub Division and injured a woman.

Sources said the herd which had wandered away from a nearby jungle had been roaming around the village forest area. Apprehending any accidents the locals tried to disperse the pachyderms when during the encounter a jumbo tossed a woman into air. She sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

In another incident, a group of elephants which had drifted away from Jharkhand wreaked havoc inside Champua forest range in Keonjhar. The herd is said to have damaged houses and properties in Bangiraposhi and Baliposhi villages of the range.

On the other hand, a dead body of a tusker was recovered from near Shankar village under Shadangi Forest Range in Dhenkanal today. The two year-old jumbo had reportedly succumbed to injuries after infighting with another herd late on Friday night.
