BANKURA, Aug 26: A herd of 60 elephants entered Bankura district last night. According to senior forest officials, on Tuesday morning the herd was sighted at the Bankadaha range in the jungles under the Panchet Soil Conservation division in Bishnupur. The herd, comprising four tuskers, is the first herd to enter Bankura this monsoon. At Asthasole, the herd entered agricultural land and destroyed a significant amount of standing crop. The forest division, however, doesn’t have any plan to drive the elephants out of Bankura.
Mr P Biswas, DFO, Panchet division, said that only in last monsoon, a jumbo herd of 80 elephants had entered the district causing extensive damage to the agricultural production. He said: “We had driven out the herd towards Midnapore West in last March. We suspect the herd didn't go back to the Dalma range in Jharkhand and was staying deep inside the jungles under Garbeta range in Midnapore West.” According to Mr Biswas, the same herd has returned. The forest officials believe that the remaining 20 elephants of the herd, separated from the principal herd, might now be following it. “We apprehend it may strike Bishnupur soon,” said Mr Biswas.
