JALPAIGURIi: In a world where elephants are fast losing their natural habitat due to human encroachments, it is unusual a rare occasion to find human beings doing a good turn for animals. One such instance was witnessed in Banerhat on Thursday. Elephants are falling prey to train accidents, and rampant poisoning, this is a story which is a sharp contrast to that and depicts the better side of human nature.

Labourers of the Huldibari tea estate in Banerhat on Thursday woke up to the trumpeting of a just-born elephant calf stuck amidst the dense tea bushes of the garden. The calf was too young to stand on its feet and yet, surprisingly enough, there was no adult elephant guarding it that could be seen around guarding the calf though they could hear elephants trumpeting in the adjacent Moraghat forest.
