Rlys asked to widen track to prevent elephant deaths (India)

Coimbatore(TN), Jul 31 (PTI)In the wake of round eight elephants being run over by trains in the last six months, Tamil Nadu forest department has suggested that the Railways widen the tracks on Coimbatore-Palakkad sector where frequent deaths have been reported.
The state has already sent a report to the Wildlife Trust of India, Delhi in this regard and is awaiting reply, Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Selvaraj told reporters here.
Eight wild elephants were knocked down by trains in the past six months on the tracks passing through the reserve forest area in the Coimbatore-Palakkad section.
Selavaraj, along with Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur Palanisamy, Conservator of Forests, P Kannan, Asst Divisional Railway Manager, Sitaram Singu and Railway officials from Palakkad (in Kerala), visited the spot on Tamil Nadu side.
