Three arrested for possession of ivory (South Africa)
Three men were arrested in Springs on Sunday for the possession of illegal ivory.
Captain Johannes Ramphora, a police spokesman, said the men, aged between 30 and 35, had been arrested in Fourth Street in the Springs CBD.
"They were searched when they were travelling in an A4 Audi on Sunday afternoon," said Ramphora. "We are still investigating whether they were trying to deal with it."
Ramphora could not say how much the ivory weighed or cost. "We are waiting for our specialists to come back with the estimations," he said.
The three men, two South Africans and a Mozambican, will appear on charges of possession of illegal ivory in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
"There may be additional charges of dealing in ivory and possibly poaching, depending on what comes out of our investigation," said Ramphora.
