Unlawful possession of two elephant tusks valued at P3,833 has landed two men in court. Appearing before Village Chief Magistrate Barnabas Nyamadzabo yesterday, Edward Kgosiemang, a Motswana was granted bail while his co-accused, Zimbabwean national Sabelo Bazwala was remanded in custody as he was deemed a flight risk.

State Prosecutor Joseph Morewakgosi told the court that investigations are not yet complete. Morewakgosi told the court that the exhibits have been examined and are indeed elephant tusks.

He told the court that Bazwala is an illegal immigrant as he failed to produce resident and traveling documents allowing him to stay in Botswana.

Morewakgosi further submitted that Bazwala should be remanded in custody pending finalisation of the matter. Bazwala has been remanded in custody for a further 14 days until his next appearance in court on September 8. On the other hand Kgosiemang was granted bail of P15,000, informed to provide two sureties, each providing a P10,000 bond and  ordered to report to Gaborone Police Station three times a week between 7.30am and 4pm.

He was also warned not to get involved in any criminal matter whilst the case is still ongoing. The accused were apprehended on July 15 and were found in possession of the two tusks without a permit. Both the accused persons are representing themselves.
