Dimapur, February 8 (MExN): The Office of the Green Succession of Nagaland State (Green - SONS) has informed that it has learned from “reliable sources” that herds of wild elephants (Elephas Maximus) has been “causing havoc” in Baghty valley. It also stated that the situation has made the villagers unable to resume their agricultural activities, which is their only source of livelihood.
The Chairman of Green-SONS in a press note has stated: “Elephants are known as keystone species which determine the existence of other zoological species as they cause destruction of the habitats and food plants of those species which are now at the verge of extinction.” Related to it he added that special attention should be given to the “sudden rise in the population as the carrying capacity of Baghty valley can no longer support the over populated elephants and need to be controlled”. Therefore, it is appealing to the concerned authority to take “special consideration and initiate necessary steps” at the earliest,so that the ecological balance can be restored in the said valley, it stated.
