KOTA KINABALU: Slightly over 2,000 Bornean Pygmy elephants are left in the wild across Sabah based on a survey conducted in 2010.
Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Pang Yuk Ming said this had put the endangered species in the Red List of the United Nation International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
“Since the survey was completed by the State Wildlife Department and World Wildlife Fund Malaysia in 2010, a series of action plans have been launched to preserve the species,” he said.
“The Borneo Elephant Sanctuary have also been formed as a rehabilitation centre to place sickly or problematic species,” Pang said.
