Vietnamese police and customs officers on Saturday seized six suitcases containing 180 kg of alleged elephant tusks and ivory products at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport.

The suitcase owners were three people from Angola, the authorities said but did not reveal their nationality. They had boarded a Vietnam Airlines flight from Angola to Hanoi, with transit at Malaysia, the authorities said.

According to Nguyen Van Hoan, head of Noi Bai airport’s customs department, the suspected smugglers claimed they had been hired by an individual in Angola to transport the goods into Vietnam.

The case is under investigation.
