A wild elephant killed two persons including a physically challenged woman in two separate incidents near Marlahalli village in Malur taluk in Kolar district on Thursday morning.

The first incident took place around 8.30 am when a physically-challenged Sumithra (33) along with her sister Monika were on the way to their field.

It is said that the elephant chased the duo and Monika ran away from the spot while Sumithra who could not run was thrown by the elephant. As a result she fell on a rock and died on the spot.

The second incident occurred two hours later when the forest officials were chasing the single wild elephant. Narayanaswamy (29) of Abhikere Hosahalli came in the way of the jumbo.

The wild elephant kicked Narayanaswamy, who later succumbed to injuries, in the hospital. The villagers blamed the forest officials for not reaching the spot even two hours after the first incident.

However, District Conservator of Forests Ramalinga Gowda said two teams have been sent in two directions and in the afternoon the wild elephant was chased to Kamasamudram Forest area.

Gowda also said initially `2 lakh each will be given as compensation to the victims’ kin and after autopsy and the chargesheet another `3 lakh each will be given.

Following the incident, a team of forest officials was deployed in the village to chase the animal back to the forest.
