A herd of elephants damaged the arecanut, banana and coconut plantations at Perdodi,Mittamoole and Puthya in Mandekolu village in Sullia taluk, in the early morning on Monday.

The plantations of Purushothama Shibarooraya, Ramanna Gowda and Panduranga Puthya fell victim to the elephant menace.

A pipeline which was installed to sprinkle water to the plantations was also damaged.

The herd was first spotted in the vicinity of Perdodi on Sunday at 9 pm.  When they were chased away by the locals, they went to the Puthya area, where the elephants damaged arecanut, banana and coconut trees.

After damaging the plantations at Puthya, the herd returned to Perdodi and Mittamoole and damaged crops.

Narayana Shibarooraya of Perdodi said the herd of elephants came close to his house, and went back after damaging some banana and arecanut trees.

“The elephant proof trenches (EPT) made by the Forest Department have proved ineffective, as the elephant menace still exists in the area.”  He sought a permanent solution to the menace.
