Coimbatore: A female elephant, aged between 15 and 20 years, was found dead on Monday morning in the Sirumugai forest range near here. While the exact reason for the death is yet to be established, forest officials say that the elephant died a natural death.

The forest ranger of Sirumugai forest range, E N Manoharan said, “One of our field officers spotted the elephant’s carcass around 10am at Kallapuram Saragam in Odanthurai area,”

The elephant is expected to be about 15 to 20 years old, Manoharan said. “We have carried out the postmortem and samples have been sent to the laboratory for tests. We will be able to establish the exact reason only after the test results are provided,” he said.

Since the jumbo was 15 to 20 years, the forest officials ruled out age as a factor. On the other hand, sources in the forest department said that a disease could be the plausible reason for the death of the elephant.

“Samples have been sent to the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Tanuvas). If the results point out at any disease, we will take appropriate measures to curb the disease,” said the district forest officer, S Ramasubramanian.
