Ivory Seizure: Kerala HC Rejects Plea for CBI Investigation (Kochi, India)

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking CBI probe into the cases related to seizure of elephant tusks from several places in Kochi, including actor Mohanlal’s residence. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A M Shaffique issued the order on the petition filed by A Poulose of Kochi, seeking CBI probe into the case. The court also declined a plea seeking a directive to the Chief Conservator of Forests to take the seized tusks into custody, which are currently kept in the house of the actor. The court observed that the solitary incident of search and seizure of tusks cannot be a ground for seeking CBI probe. The petitioner pointed out that four elephant tusks were seized from the house of Mohanlal at Thevara in a raid conducted by the Income Tax Department in June 2012, and a case was registered by a forest station under the Kodanadu Range.
