Summary: In the months of September and October 2015, the abundance of elephant meat being sold in Opala and in Ubundu showed that the Lomami National Park (DRCongo) elephants were under increasing pressure.

Concerned authorities in the Congolese military, secret service, national parks and Orientale Province administration collaborated to confiscate two shipments of ivory at the airport and to arrest two military officers transporting ivory between Opala and Kisangani.  Furthermore two elephant poachers have been arrested.

It is clear that poaching gangs and their collaboration with certain corrupt military and administrators have developed over a period of time and that the abundance of weapons and ammunition used by these gangs has resulted in murders and other crimes against the village populations.
