Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed after an elephant trampled a man at Oupada Mahadia village under Sadar range in Dhenkanal in the wee hours on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Prasanna Baral. The incident occurred when he was on his way to a nearby field for attending nature’s call.
Local villages said that Baral had come in the way of a wild tusker and it later trampled him on the road. The tusker is part of a herd consisting of 10 to 12 elephants that had strayed into the human settlement yesterday.
Though villagers had rushed Baral to Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Panic has now gripped the entire village as the elephant herd is still moving near the area and has taken refuge at a mango orchard.
Senior officials of forest department are closely tracking the movements of the jumbo while efforts are still on to drive the herd back into the forest.
