Malawi: Police Arrest Man for Possessing Ivory

Mangochi — A 40 year old man identified as Paul Byson has been arrested by Mangochi police for being found in possession of Ivory contrary to section 110 (b) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.

Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Inspector Rodrick Maida told Malawi News Agency on Monday that the suspect was arrested following a tip from members of the community that he was keeping ivory.

“Officers from the National Police Headquarters apprehended the man at Mwanjati Village in the area of T/A Namavi at about 8:30 pm,” Maida said.

He said Byson was found with four pieces of the ivory weighing 20 kilogrammes which was valued at K27, 200, 000 without a professional hunter’s licence.

Maida said Byson comes from Mkungumbe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in the district.
