Barely few weeks after President Peter Mutharika hinted on the fight against smuggling of ivory, Police in Mangochi district have arrested three men for being found with the highly sought ivory.
Officer in-charge for Ngokwe Police, Robert Mkandawire confirmed the arrest identifying the three as James Nyondo, Kavina Maulidi and Jonas Thomson.
“We arrested the suspect at Ngokwe trading centre following a tip from fellow police officers in Mozambique” said Mkandawire.
According to Mkandawire, the three suspects are to appear before Mangochi Magistrate court to answer charges to be levelled against them.
This comes at a time when government is still consulting on what to be done with the four tonnes of the impounded ivory from poachers and smuggler with others saying government should just sell them.
The three are from Chikowi village in the area of Traditional Authority Ngokwe in Mangochi district.
