THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: High tension prevailed at Balaramapuram, in the outskirts of the city, on Tuesday morning after an elephant ran amok, greviously injuring a 75-year-old man.

Viswambharan Nair, a resident of Anthiyoor, Balaramapuram, was stamped and tossed away by the rampaging elephant.

The incident occurred around 8.45 am at Nellivila near Balaramapuram when one of the three elephants kept at an open compound broke its shackles and went rogue.

Nair, a daily wage labourer, was stamped by the elephant when he accidentally came in front of the tusker. He was rushed to the Medical College Hospital as he sustained serious injuries.

The elephant reportedly destroyed many farm lands as well. Many sustained minor injuries in the melee.

It was brought under the control by the mahout and the local police by 10 am at a compound of a house near the Government Hospital, here. The three elephants were shifted to the place a few days ago to work in a timber mill based at Karakkamandapam.
