Sidda (35), the injured elephant, who had been battling for life at the Manchanbele dam site, off Magadi Road, in the outskirts of Bengaluru, died in the wee hours of Friday.
The wild elephant had strayed out of forest and injured its leg near a stone quarry. In September, the severely injured elephant turned up at Manchanabele reservoir, about 40km west of Bengaluru, and sought refuge in the waters. Several veterinarians, wildlife volunteers along with forest department officials, were attending the pachyderm with medication.

D Manjunath, deputy conservator of forests (Ramanagar), confirmed the news to TOI and said they will be conducting postmortem on the animal within few hours. “We have decided to bury the elephant near the dam site, where it had taken shelter,” he added.

On Thursday, veterinarians had told TOI that Sidda was slowly recovering and learning to stand on its own. The death of Sidda has shocked wildlife lovers and environmentalists.

In November second week, a joint rescue operation by the Indian Army, Wildlife SOSand the Karnataka forest department resulted in successful moving the downed elephant Sidda into a specially designed structure where the Wildlife SOS veterinarians could provide long term treatment to the ailing elephant.
