It is an animal that is one of the world’s biggest, but when it comes to depicting it, one artist has decided to make it as small as possible.
South African-born Jonty Hurwitz, has created a micro-sculpture that is no bigger than a crumb – a remarkable one tenth of a millimetre that is barely visible to the human eye.
His aim is to represent the fragile state of the elephant in Africa.
The sculpture was produced via a process called nano-painting.
It is too small to be seen with the naked eye so must be viewed and photographed under a microscope.
Describing the process on his website Mr Hurwitz says the structure is created using a ground-breaking new 3D printing technology and a technique called ‘Multiphoton Lithography’.
