A wild elephant that visited a private plantation farm at Varadimala valley in Sholayur to relish jackfruit fell down and died.

The tusker died after its legs got trapped between the branches of a tree and it tripped down. The postmortem report says that the elephant died after a heart attack following the fall.

The tusker is around 18 years old. The carcass of the tusker was found by the plantation workers on Wednesday morning. The forest department officials examined the body using metal detectors to find out whether the tusker was shot down. Veterinary doctors led by Agali Veterinary hospital surgeon Dr Reji conducted the postmortem.

Mannarkkad DFO Jayaprakash said that there is nothing unnatural in the tusker’s death as there were no bruises or marks on its body. The dead tusker is part of the herd of elephants which have destroyed many crops in Sholayar and Chittoor regions.
