Understanding Elephants
Save the Elephants specialises in elephant research, providing scientific insight into elephant behaviour, intelligence, and long-distance movements. Decades of fieldwork have revealed just how socially complex, emotionally intelligent, and deeply connected these animals are — knowledge that comes not from assumption, but from sustained, rigorous study across some of Africa’s wildest landscapes. This understanding forms the foundation for everything that follows: it’s what allows us to translate scientific insight into real solutions for elephant survival and harmonious coexistence with humanity.

Elephant Pathways & Protection
Elephants do not recognise the boundaries we draw; they depend on ancient pathways to move across vast distances, and protecting them means ensuring the critical routes that connect landscapes remain unsevered. Through tracking, GPS collars and long-term movement data, Save the Elephants understands how elephants use the landscape, informing planning decisions that keep migration corridors open and habitats connected. Alongside this, the Elephant Crisis Fund provides flexible, responsive support to organizations across Africa combatting the ivory trade and protecting elephant landscapes, ensuring core habitats and the corridors that link them are safeguarded through better planning.

Human-Elephant Coexistence
Landscapes once roamed freely by elephants are under pressure from rapid development and, as the human population grows, the space left for elephants and wildlife is shrinking. As a result, a new challenge has emerged: how elephants and people can coexist in an increasingly crowded continent. We know coexistence is possible through practical solutions such as proper landscape planning, collaboration with governments and communities, and tracking data that serves as a voice for elephants. In areas where people and elephants are forced to live together, our Human-Elephant Coexistence Toolbox outlines more than 80 tried, tested and sustainable methods to safely keep elephants at bay, with approaches that can be adapted to suit different environments.
