An 18-year-old female elephant was found dead in Bhavanisagar forest range near Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) in Erode district on Saturday. According to forest officials, the elephant got stuck in the mud of Moyar river bank and died due to suffocation.
On Saturday morning, the villagers saw the dead elephant and alerted forest officials who in turn informed a veterinarian. The carcass was buried after postmortem was conducted.
