Belgium is set to join the growing list of enlightened countries and is to destroy its ivory stockpile. Deputy Prime Minister Laurette Onkelinx announced this morning – on World Wildlife Day – that Belgium would crush its stockpiles on April 9th 2014.

The crushing is being organised by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Belgium government. The date of April 9th has been chosen as it will be the day before the European Union is set to announced plans to combat an increase in wildlife trafficking.

Belgium’s decision means that another country has determined that there is no future for trading in dead elephants and that keeping elephants alive is much more valuable.
