Couple among three killed by jumbos in Odisha (India)

Three persons, including a couple, were killed in elephant attacks in two separate incidents in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, police said Sunday.
 
A couple Purna Mahanta and his wife Abanti Mohanta of village Sitarampur, who were sleeping in their paddy field, were trampled to death by a jumbo on Saturday night, said Padmanav Nayak, IIC Baria police station.
 
One Laxmidhar Giri of nearby Chakulia village was killed in an elephant attack near a brick kiln, Nayak said.
 
The bodies were sent Champua sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem, he added.
 
Next of kin of the deceased persons were provided Rs 10,000 per person for cremation purposes by the Forest department authorities, police said.
