Local residents in Dak Lak Province Wednesday found the carcass of an elephant calf in a mud pond in the Ea Sup Thuong Forest.
Huynh Trung Luan, director of the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation Center, said the body had decomposed.
“We are yet to identify the age of the calf, but it seems to be a newborn.”
In the dry season wild elephants often find water at Ea Sup Thuong Lake and the animal probably died after being caught in mud, he said.
Last month the center’s conservationists rescued a two-month-old baby elephant from a two-meter-deep well.
They are trying to reintroduce it to the wild, but several attempts have failed, with the herd apparently rejecting it because it had contracted human smells.
Dak Lak is home to around 60 wild elephants out of the country’s total of 100.
