COIMBATORE: Forest department officials rescued a five-month-old male elephant calf from a water tank near the reserve forest at Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district on Sunday and rejoined the animal with its herd.

The forest department has also deputed a team of anti-poaching watchers to monitor the elephant calf in Periyanciakenpalayam forest range.

According to officials, three wild elephants raided agricultural fields at Rayaruthupathi near Naickenpalayam on the outskirts of the city on Sunday early morning. The farmers immediately alerted the Periyanaickenpalayam forest ranger Palaniraja, who rushed to the spot along with a team of anti-poaching watchers.
