A five year old elephant, which was under treatment for the last three years for bone fracture, died at Theppakkad elephant camp coming under Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.

Ranga, alias Chemmozhiyan, was brought to the camp after it separated from its mother five years ago from Sathyamangalam forest area.

The elephant, which slipped down from a height, suffered serious bone problem, as both the legs and rib fractured three years ago, necessitating it to lie down in specially made jute and water beds, sources in forest department said.

Various treatments, including Ayurveda failed to revive they said, adding that doctors also made futile attempt to provide artificial legs and also stretchers for walking support.

The elephant will be buried in the camp itself, the sources said.
