A female elephant, aged about 35 years, was found dead at Manalaar Saraagam under Amaravathi range of Anamalai Tiger Reserve on Monday. District Forest Officer A. Periasamy said that the carcass was first noticed by the field employees in the Forest department.

Severe injuries

“According to local people, they heard a loud trumpeting noise late last night. The animal was found with severe injuries which looked to have been caused by goring by a strong male elephant,” he said.

He added that the exact cause of death could be ascertained only after the autopsy report was published.
