Close on the heels of the rail kill of the 10-year-old tusker near Walayar railway station, the forest department on Saturday shot off a letter to the railway officials of Palakkad division, urging it to bring down train speed to a minimum 25kmph near elephant corridors to curb incidents of rail kill.
It also requested the chief wildlife warden, V K Melkani, to conduct an interstate meeting of forest and railway officials to brainstorm ways to save elephants.
