ROURKELA:A drive was launched by Forest Department officials on Saturday evening to drive away a herd of eight elephants from Jabaghat, about five kms from here, to Bisra forest range in Sundargarh district.

Assistant Conservator of Forest JK Mohanty said the drive was started at 5.30 pm and the herd was driven about three kms towards Bisra forest.

The elephants had arrived at Jabaghat through Bondamunda route on Friday night and spent the day near the bank of river Koel at Jabaghat. Efforts are on to guide the elephants to return on the same route, he added.

Mohanty said two years back, it was the same herd having 11 elephants which had twice entered Rourkela city.

While one female elephant of the herd had died, two other elephants were temporarily separated, he added.
