The Forest Department faced a challenging situation in handling a dead elephant at Vilamundi reserve forest area for many hours on Wednesday as the carcass was surrounded by a herd.

According to the Forest Department officials, locals near Vilamundi East Beat had given information about loud trumpeting by elephants on Tuesdayevening, and since it was dark by then, a team went to the spot on Wednesday morning.

However, the team could not get close to the carcass since the herd appeared aggressive. After sustained efforts, the herd was chased into the forest and the post-mortem was conducted on the spot, under the supervision of Forest Range Officer of Bhavani Sagar Bernard.
