Illegal Ivory Dealer Fined

A Chitungwiza man arrested for possessing 47kg of ivory valued at US$11 750 was last week fined US$500 for contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.Munyaradzi Chadimuhwa (37) of Zengeza 2 is not licensed to possess or deal in ivory.

Magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo fined Chadimuhwa after giving him a wholly suspended 10 months sentence. This was after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor Mr Tendai Mukariri said that on February 2 at around 9pm, Chadimuhwa took 47kg of ivory to his house where he started processing, carving and polishing it.

He manufactured an animal artefact, 120 bangles, 110 chop sticks, 368 chess set pieces and assorted ivory blocks. The crime came to light when detectives from Homicide were tipped off on his operations and raided his house.

They recovered two hippo teeth, warthog teeth and the various artefacts from his bedroom and arrested him.
