Russia will support the Congo in the fight against poaching — The Russian Federation will support the Congo in organizing the international conference on illegal logging and illegal trade in wildlife products, scheduled for April 27 to 30 next in Brazzaville, announced Tuesday in Brazzaville, his ambassador Valery Mikhaylov, following a meeting with the Congolese Minister of Forest Economy and Sustainable Development, Henri Djombo.
“We discussed important issues including (…) the planned conference in Brazzaville in April, the fight against poaching. This issue is very important for Russia and we are ready to work with the Congo in this area,” said the Russian diplomat. “Russia will support the Republic of Congo in organizing the international conference on illegal logging and the illegal trade in wildlife products and plants,” said Mr. Mikhaylov, adding also that the two countries have an almost similar position regarding the protection of the environment. Thus, he said, the same for the conference, Russia joins the Congo through national efforts to fight together against poaching. According to a study by the Project to support the implementation of the Wildlife Act (PALF), a NGO based in Brazzaville, Congo, some 5,000 elephants were killed in the Congolese forest in Central Africa over the past five years.
