An elephant that was found roaming with an injured right hind limb in Bandipur Tiger Reserve died late on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old elephant had a large swelling on its leg, which was noticed by forest beat personnel three days back. They were keeping a watch on the elephant even as it kept moving inside the forest. Finally, the elephant lost consciousness and fells down close to Nugu dam backwaters.

Bandipur reserve director T Heeralal said, “As the elephant was moving with an injured leg, we were keeping a close watch. After it fell down near Nuru, we tried to give it treatment on Monday. However, it did not respond and died on Tuesday.”

“We don’t know what caused the injury. Post mortem will be done on Wednesday,” the director added.
