Jumbo calf trampled to death by adult herd-mate near Sirumugai (India)

 A female elephant calf was trampled to death by another elephant in the Uliyur beat in Sirumugaiforest range here on Thursday evening. The carcass of the calf was found near the backwaters of the Bhavanisagar Dam by staff of the forest department on Friday.

A postmortem was conducted in the reserve forest area.

“Every day, more than 50 elephants are spotted near the backwaters of Bhavanisagar Dam. Our forest staff had noticed a herd of elephants at 5pm on Thursday. The herd had retreated back to the forest at night. They found the carcass of the female calf on Friday,” said EN Manoharan, forest range officer, Sirumugai range.

He also added that the calf was just a month old and it had been trampled to death by one of the elephants in the herd. Sathiyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) veterinary doctor Ashokan and his team conducted the postmortem inside the reserve forest. Later, the carcass was buried inside the forest.
