Residents of Kapasira and Asurkhol Tuesday sought the immediate treatment of an ailing elephant calf that was seen roaming around in the villages after being separated from its herd for three days.
According to sources, the female elephant was spotted roaming around with an infection in its trunk. It failed to take food due to the infection, sources said. The animal was first spotted at Asurkhol under Tileibani block in this district and was later seen in Kapasira.
Locals tried to provide it food, but in didn’t receive food due to the infection. Locals alleged though they informed forest officials of the incident, the latter failed to rescue the animal.
However, Deogarh divisional forest officer Binaya Bhushan Kumar refuted the allegation of locals and said that a special team from Bhubaneswar was on its way to the village for the treatment of the elephant. The animal will be treated Wednesday upon the arrival of the special team, he added.
Ailing elephant dies
Boinda: A female elephant ailing since Sunday at Jaelipathar forest under Dhandadhepa range in Angul district breathed its last Tuesday. Forest officials conducted a post-mortem of the elephant and subsequently buried it in the forest. Forest officials provided all necessary treatment to the 55-year-old elephant. However, the pachyderm failed to stand up due to its old age and didn’t receive food and water leading to its death, officials said. PNN
