Even as wildlife activists in the State have launched an online
campaign, #GiantRefugees, urging Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to
protect elephants, the death of a jumbo calf in Ganjam district once
again exposes the sorry state of affairs in this regard in the State.

An elephant was seen guarding her calf’s body near a pond in which the
junior fell to death.

The calf was found dead on Saturday morning in the pond at Giredi
village under the Bhanjanagar Forest Range in the district.

Forest officials failed to recover body of the baby elephant as its
mother elephant kept guarding the carcass.
