Poachers have killed an elephant at Mgeno Reserve in Taita Taveta. Taita Taveta Rancher’s Association coordinator Donald Mombo yesterday said the female elephant was spotted by game scouts last Tuesday evening without both its tusks.

Mombo said the elephant could have left behind a calf because by yesterday, milk was still dripping from its udder. “The elephant was killed using a poisoned arrow,” he said on the phone.

Kenya Wildlife Service assistant director in charge of Tsavo conservation area, Robert Obrien, said they had not received the information of the elephant’s death by the time of going to press.

“I am not aware of the incident, but I will send my officers to the ground to follow up the matter. We shall also make efforts to save the calf,” he said.
