TEZPUR: A herd of wild elephants has been creating mayhem during the last 24 hours at Rangapara area besides the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh bordering areas destroying several houses.

Forest Department sources revealed that the herd comprising 40-50 elephants regularly coming out from Sonai Rupai wildlife sanctuary in search of food, has been creating havoc in the tea gardens and nearby villages damaging several houses pushing a number of families to pass sleepless nights.

The victims alleged that the Forest Department has totally failed to deal with the issue.

Meanwhile, admitting the ongoing wild elephant problem in the area, CCF, P Siv Kumar said that on Saturday night the herd damaged four dwellings at Tarajuli Tea Garden and 10 dwellings at Sessa and Tarajuli Tea Gardens under the Rangapara PS in Sonitpur district.

“The area which falls under the Amaribari range is being monitored and to push back the wild elephants’ herd, necessary measures have been taken,” he said.
