Jumbos destroy over 2,000 banana, coconut trees (Coimbatore, India)

A herd of elephants destroyed a large number of banana plantation and coconut trees in a farm in Kittampalaya in Mettupalayam in the district in the early hours of today. 

The herd, numbering over 13, moved down from Nellimalai area and entered the farms and destroyed nearly 2,000 banana plantations and over 12 coconut trees, police said. 

The elephants are found moving in the region for the last 20 days, travelling more than 200 KMs, triggering panic in the area, they said. 

Though efforts were being taken to drive away the pachyderms, the herd moved to another place, police added.
