A farmer allegedly ended his life after wild elephants destroyed his
standing crops here on Sunday.

The deceased Nagesh alias Bogappa (24) was a resident of Baragi
village. Nagesh had farmland close to the fringes of the forest. He
faced crop loss for the second time.  A herd of elephants had ventured
into his field six months ago, and destroyed his crops.

Though he received some compensation from the Forest Department, he
had incurred losses. On Sunday morning, Nagesh found his banana
plantation destroyed by elephants.  It is said he became apprehensive
that he might not be able to return a loan of `3 lakh and ended his
life.

His family members alleged that though they complained several times
to forest officials regarding elephant menace, nothing was done.
