A Mombasa court will on Monday determine whether two suspects arrested over an ivory consignment will be released on bond.
Senior principal magistrate Richard Odenyo informed the suspects that the ruling had not yet been prepared and it will be ready on June 23.
The ruling was to be delivered yesterday after Ghalib Kara and Abdul Omar pleaded with the court to release them on bond pending hearing and determination of their case.
Kara and Omar were charged with having wildlife trophies on June 11.
The court was informed that on June 6, at Fuji Motors East Africa on Tom Mboya Avenue in Tudor, Mombasa county, the two were found with 314 elephant tusks.
The more than 2,000kg consignment was estimated to be worth Sh44 million. Kara and Omar told the court that the prosecution had not given compelling reasons to deny them bail.
They said they are businessmen in Mombasa and would not abscond court if released on bond. The prosecution however opposed their application saying the offence the duo is charged with is serious.
He said they have evidence against the two. The prosecution said Kara and Omar may disappear if released.
The prosecution asked the court to put into consideration the high rate at which poaching is growing and deny the duo bond.
