Kenya: Jumbo Crushes Granny to Death

A 101 year old granny from Ndunguni Sub-location in Nguu division Makueni county was on Monday evening killed by a stray jumbo while fetching firewood in a bush near her house.
 
The stray elephant suspected to from the Chyullu Hills National Park trampled Mary Katilimu less than 100 metres from her house at 5.00pm.
 
Nzaui dsub-county administration Police Commander SP Emmanuel Thoya who confirmed the incident said that Katilimu’s body was taken to Machakos Level 5 hospital mortuary.
 
Last year four marauding elephants invaded Kilili location in Nzaui district where they killed a 70 year old man and seriously injured two women who spent more than three months in Makueni level 5 hospital with fractured limbs.
 
Last week five stray elephants invade Imbuko village in Isara division of Kajiado county and killed Mpaa Saitoti Sapuru (40 years old) while on his way from a local market.
 
Local Maasai community blocked Emali- Loitokitok road for two days in protest of the killings until local leaders addressed them. The animals also destroyed bananas and water melon farms.
 
Kenya wildlife service officers led by Jeremiah Rungut visited Kikumini area and by yesterday they were still trying to drive away the wild animals back to the park.
