AYUTTHAYA, 15 September 2014 (NNT) –The President of Lae Paniad Elephant Kraal in Ayutthaya has suggested the government prohibit the ivory trade.

At present, many Thai traders are permitted to order imported ivory costing billions of baht each year, for the creation of sacred objects, decoration, and in industry. To prevent smuggling in the ivory trade, the Thai government has suggested allowing elephant keepers to sell ivory only from deceased elephants.

Traders who want to run factories transforming ivory into art objects, must be listed on a commercial registration; violators would be fined 2,000 baht maximum.
